Learning Material
In the context of the EIT Climate-KIC Young Innovators programme in Cyprus we are using the lesson-plans provided through the programme’s learning platform, and the programme’s Visual Toolbox. Each of these is described below.
Learning Management System (LMS)
The Young Innovators’ Learning Management System (LMS) is located in Brightspace, an online space developed by the EIT Climate-KIC team to facilitate the implementation of the programme in all country-partners. It has been designed as a one-stop-shop to provide all the YI programme and teaching resources that you will need for your planned activities.
Saying so this area is for anyone interested in taking an active role in supporting or delivering the Young Innovators programme, including potential and existing delivery partners, sponsors, schools, teachers, expert coaches, & members of local community/industry sectors interested in working together on challenges for the School Innovator and Climate Changemaker areas of the programme, or hosting/supporting a Young Climathon event.
One of the most important elements of this area in the Teachers Handbook under Course #3, as well as the suggested lesson plans. The former is a comprehensive manual for teachers and educators with clear steps and practical facilitation tips, which, in combination with the latter, will help you transfer the programme into your classroom. It presents a set of guided activities that aim to support young people to engage with local climate challenges, give them a sense of empowerment, and build their skills and values.
The latter, on the other hand, will help you put all the four learning Modules of the programme into practice, guiding you and your students through each step of the programme: from making sense of the challenge, analysing its system dynamics, finding opportunities for improvement, and ultimately developing unique solutions for change. It is worth mentioning that the lesson plans are part of the YI Toolbox for teachers, therefore each plan shares a clear outline of the timings for each tool, as well as the steps to be taken to facilitate these in the classroom.
Please note that the toolkit contains the initial versions of these documents - and as they are tested and iterated, final versions of the lesson plans - as well as graphical versions of the tools/new canvases - will replace these first versions.
The EIT Climate-KIC Visual Toolbox
The EIT Climate-KIC Young Innovators Cyprus consortium will be using the EIT Climate-KIC Visual toolbox resources for systems innovation analysis. The visual tools help to facilitate the students’ understanding of complex real-world problems such as climate change, energy, or food, and come up with creative solutions for them. By following the system thinking approach for understanding the multiple aspects of a problem, visual tools help to tap into the student’s creativity to innovate. The Visual Toolbox consists of five tools: the My System Map, the Challenge Board, the Explore the Challenge, the Navigating the Challenge Path, and the Cover Story. In stage 1 of the project, teachers will have the opportunity to get familiar and experiment with the EIT Climate-KIC Visual toolbox resources. In stage 2 of the project, students will be called to work collaboratively, utilizing the Visual toolbox resources in order to identify and understand the different aspects of a local problem and propose the most sustainable solution.
